Become a NAHRA Certified Instructor?
The first step to becoming a therapeutic riding instructor is to spend time with horses and people with disabilities. One way to achieve this is to volunteer to assist other instructors at TEC. Many instructors get their start by volunteering as side-walkers (someone who walks alongside the horse and rider for support and assistance) or leaders (someone who leads the horse during the riding lesson). Volunteering is a great way to find out if becoming a certified instructor is right for you.
The North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) offers three levels of certification for therapeutic riding instructors: Registered, Advanced and Master. The requirements for each level include skills in Equine Management, Horsemanship, Instruction, Teaching Methodology and Disabilities. Visit the NARHA website for more information.
